Dallas: When Kenny Chesney comes to play, very little can stop him – or his fans. So in spite of the rain and the wind, as long as the crowd want to be there, Kenny Chesney is going to play! And last night at the Pizza Hit Stadium, Chesney and Co, gamely took the stage; only to have the show called 50 minutes into his high energy set. You know the weather’s lousy, said the man from Luttrell, who came to play, but you look out, and the fans are hanging in there, having a good time. They’re in the rain, but they’re singing along – and you know they’re staying because they wanna see you. When you see that, there’s nothing in the world that’s gonna stop me from going on! If they wanna be part of the party that much, well, then, here we come. And it’s kinda like sports, the game doesn’t stop for a little rain. Having just played for almost 5 hours for the grand opening of the Joint in Las Vegas and capturing a rave review at EW.com for his lean headlining set at Indio, CA’s Stage Coach Festival, Chesney and his band are in the zone for the Corona Extra-sponsored Sun City Carnival. Even with the weather strong enough to do significant damage to Irving, Texas-located Dallas Cowboys’ Training Center, the fans held strong and the man who’s won 4 straight Academy of Country Music and 4-time and current Country Music Association Entertainer of the Years responded in kind. And once you get out that stage and you start playing, Chesney explained, that energy from the fans hit you you see all those faces having such a great time and I won’t say you don’t notice the rain, but you sure don’t care. The fans are there. They’re rocking That’s all that you really sense. Fifty minutes into the set, the amount of water that had fallen threatened the integrity of the stage. With the tonnage from the speakers, equipment and cables, it was ruled unsafe for the band to continue. Taking the moment into consideration, Chesney broke from the set list, looked out at the completely drenched crowd and reached into his catalogue for something rarely performed, but absolutely appropriate. Making an audible call, the man who’s sold over a million tickets each of the past seven summers offered the crowd Something Sexy About The Rain, from his introspective Be As You Are: Songs from an Old Blue Chair. Looking at all those people soaked to the bone, having the time of their life through all that weather, all I saw was a lot of heart and a lot of passion for what we – all of us, me and them – were doing, Chesney said. If that’s not sexy, that being there through some really nasty weather, because they’d come to have a good time and nothing was going to stop them, what is? So you wanna do something really special, that marks this moment you’ve just shared – and ‘Something Sexy About The Rain’ seemed the perfect song for the moment.

Douglas Marland Interview, New York Times – July 6, 1986 [Excerpt]:

Recently, Mr. Marland allowed a visitor to sit in on a weekly meeting with ”As the World Turns” executives in the CBS Broadcast Center on West 57th Street, as well as a story conference with the show’s two outline writers. Before scripts are written, the week’s story outlines (called ”breakdowns”) are critiqued each Wednesday by executive producer Robert Calhoun, two production officials from the network and one from Procter & Gamble, which owns ”As the World Turns” and three other soaps.

Mr. Calhoun passed around photographs of a picturesque Connecticut pond selected for location shooting of various innocent and illicit romantic scenes, including an affair that will begin on tomorrow’s episode. In typical soap-opera fashion, the lovers will be caught in the act by another character.

The group reached a consensus quickly on casting a major new teen-age character named Emily Stewart, who, in tomorrow’s episode, has already moved to town and begun flirting with one of the show’s young heartthrobs. A 22-year-old actress from California, Colleen McDermott, was chosen from six screen-tested finalists. ”She’s young and green, but she’s going to grow into someone special,” said Mr. Calhoun. ”I want to get her into acting school right away.”

A recent session began with plans for handling the death at age 79 of actor Don MacLaughlin, who had portrayed the Hughes family patriarch since the first episode of ”As the World Turns” on April 2, 1956. ”Although there will be a six-week delay [in the audience's learning of the death], we felt we must play it out, not simply stick something into existing episodes,” Mr. Marland said. The writers discussed how each character might react to the news that ”Chris Hughes” had died in his sleep, and Mrs. Franz suggested weaving in flashbacks from earlier installments.
