Smells Like Canine Spirit – original song (Nirvana parody)

If you’ve ever had to deal with neighborhood dogs using your yard for their bathroom then I’m sure you can relate to this song. I wrote a poem a long time ago about the frustration one feels in a situation like that. Years later I accidently discovered that my poem could be sung to the melody of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit with very little modification. The intense energy of that grunge groove seemed to convey my frustation about the situation better than anything else so, I’ve been doing it that way ever since. I did not and still do not intend for this to be a parody or spoof or lampoon of Teen Spirit in any sense of the word. Although the original title of this work is Dog Biscuit Lament, everyone who hears the song thinks of it as a parody of Teen Spirit even though that isn’t what I had in mind when I wrote it. It wasn’t even a song originally, it was a poem, I merely borrowed Teen Spirit’s tune for the reasons stated previously, it’s the best fit. However, Kurt Cobain himself believed that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and many different versions and parodies of Teen Spirit have appeared over the years. So, with that in mind, I finally gave in to the idea of this song as a parody even though that wasn’t my original intent.
That is my sole rationale and I sincerely do not intend any disrespect or offense toward Kurt Cobain, his family or his fans. Kurt Cobain had a lot to offer the world in terms of his music and creativity and I was deeply saddened by his tragic death at such a young age. So, with the best of intentions and utmost respect for Kurt Cobain, his family and his fans – I humbly present a song about my trials and tribulations involving inconsiderate neighbors and their dogs entitled “Smells Like Canine Spirit” (Dog Biscuit Lament).
